故事發生在十六世紀的西班牙，彼時，西班牙和英國正在激烈的交戰之中打得難舍難分。英國艦隊的艦長理查（Lyn Harding 飾）和其子邁克爾（勞倫斯·奧利弗 Laurence Olivier 飾）遭到了地方的俘虜，然而理查和西班牙海軍上將瓦德斯（Charles Carson 飾）是多年的老友，于是將邁克爾送到他家，自己卻死在了敵人的炮火之下。
在瓦德斯家，邁克爾遇見了瓦德斯的女兒辛西婭（費雯·麗 Vivien Leigh 飾），辛西婭愛慕著英俊有為的邁克爾，但邁克爾卻懷揣著滿腔對于敵人的憤怒回到英國效忠女王。之后，邁克爾隱姓埋名，喬裝打扮來到西班牙執行臥底任務，被國王安排住在希拉里（詹姆斯·梅森 James Mason 飾）家中，沒想到卻在此遇見了已經成為希拉里妻子的辛西婭。
